BACKGROUND
Born in Canada and raised in Canada and the United States, Cheryl Cowan Buchwald resides in Toronto. After a varied career in business, public service and academia, she now concentrates on visual art-making. Buchwald has studied art in Toronto and Paris and has shown in both solo and group exhibitions. Her work is in private and corporate collections in Canada and the United States. Her two- and three-dimensional works in acrylic and mixed media straddle the boundaries between abstract and figurative expression.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Making art appeals to me for its investigative and experimental qualities. An equally strong attraction rests in the fact that the visual and tactile elements of colour and diverse media create limitless possibilities for expression. My abstract series is an extension of my interest in the intricacies of light manipulated through the play of colour and thin layers of paint. In contrast, my figurative work explores the ironies manifested between 'reality' and perception created, in part, through a monochromatic palette.
My abstract work was initially inspired by Ross Bleckner's series of cathedral ceilings. Over time it has segued into cosmic forms created in acrylic on canvas,
acrylic on wood panel, and water-based media on paper.
My portrait series queries appearances and perceptions. What are we trying to convey to others? How accurate are impressions? For these paintings, I approached men I know who wear hats to pose for me. I was delighted to see who these men became; their individual dignity speaks to me, even with their transformation into somewhat sinister but droll characters.
